After a first, extremely modest production in September 1980, the creation of 'Clumzy' (personage, magazine and non-profit organization) was the first actual realization of Marc Hendrickx. Hendrickx' alter ego was drawn in those beginning days by comic-artist RIP and accom-panied a magazine on comics, posters, and book releases. Next to looking for and giving chances to young talent, time was equally spent working with seasoned professionals such as Jijé or Franquin. In the mid-eighties 'Clumzy'-activities spread out widely. The organization took hold of the literary magazine 'Initiatief,' poetry and theatrical plays saw the light of day, two Clumzy-Club J Trophies were awarded in cooperation with Belgium's biggest bank, and work of celebrities like Jan Bosschaert and Marc Sleen graced bookcovers. By end of the decade however, 'Clumzy' had to move aside. Not only did Hendrickx own work demand his full attention, the other team members had also outgrown the opportunities the organization could offer. Victim number one? The Clumzy-personage. Taken over by Dirk Stallaert, later by Steven Dupré, the anti-hero never did get any further than a few loose drawings and gags, the announcing of a never written-out story called 'De rode draad' and a full page storyboard containing 'Clumzy in Zaire.' As fate would have it, this adventure would become the only text of Hendrickx that never made it into publication. |
